Pope Benedict XVI was the 265th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He was born Joseph Ratzinger to a German Catholic family. In 1951, Ratzinger was ordained a priest. In 1977, he became Archbishop of Munich and Freising, a few months after becoming archbishop, he was created a cardinal by Pope Paul VI. In 2005, when Pope John Paul II died, Ratzinger won a papal conclave and took a new name: Benedict XVI. In 2013, he abdicated and was replaced by Jorge Bergoglio, who became Pope Francis.
